Handan Qifeng Carbon advises on technical selection of UHP graphite electrodes

Handan Qifeng Carbon Co., Ltd. cautions that oversized ultra-high-power electrodes can impair furnace efficiency and lead to structural failure if not matched to transformer capacity.

Handan Qifeng Carbon Co., Ltd. warns that increasing the diameter of ultra-high-power (UHP) electrodes for electric arc furnaces does not inherently improve performance. The company highlights that electrode selection must align with transformer capacity and specific furnace design to prevent thermal stress and subsequent breakage.

Industry standards indicate that while larger diameters handle higher currents, they introduce mechanical vulnerabilities. For furnaces ranging from 60 to 100 MVA, diameters of 550 mm to 700 mm are typical. However, Handan Qifeng Carbon emphasizes that power output should be optimized by adjusting voltage rather than indiscriminately increasing electrode size, especially in modern high-impedance furnace configurations.

The firm advises operators to calculate the required current-carrying area based on actual secondary-side current load rather than relying solely on transformer nameplate capacity. By selecting the closest standard diameter with a calculated margin, operators can maintain efficiency without incurring the risks associated with equipment over-specification.
