Handan Qifeng Carbon Co., Ltd. has outlined a systematic method to infer the structural integrity of graphite electrodes by examining the surface finish of workpieces after electrical discharge machining (EDM). The approach serves as an indirect diagnostic tool to detect "loose zones"—areas of reduced density or uneven binder distribution within the electrode.

According to the company, inconsistencies in the graphite structure alter the thermal and electrical discharge stability at the point of contact. These irregularities manifest on the workpiece as localized abnormal craters, inconsistent carbon deposition layers, or sudden spikes in surface roughness that deviate from the expected machining parameters. By identifying these patterns, operators can determine if an electrode is experiencing localized wear or failure.

The analysis procedure involves three primary levels of inspection: low-magnification microscopic scanning for irregular surface patches, localized roughness measurement to detect outliers in Ra or Rz values, and cross-sectional metallographic examination to confirm findings. The company notes that while this process cannot replace non-destructive testing like CT scanning, it provides a viable way for manufacturers to monitor electrode performance in real-time.

This diagnostic framework aims to help operators differentiate between machine-related errors and material defects within the graphite tooling, ultimately facilitating improved process control.
