Lund, Sweden-based Hansa Biopharma AB has announced that Australia's first commercial patient has received a kidney transplant with the assistance of the drug Idefirix. The patient received a donated kidney from a living donor. This marks a significant step in the drug's commercial utilization in the country.
Idefirix, also known as imlifidase, is intended for patients with high levels of antibodies who require a kidney transplant. The drug breaks down immunoglobulins, reducing the patient's sensitization and enabling a transplant that would otherwise have been prevented due to tissue incompatibility.
The successful treatment in Australia demonstrates the drug's potential to expand organ transplant opportunities for patients previously hindered by high antibody levels. Hansa Biopharma has previously received marketing authorization in the European Union and the United States for similar indications.
