Harz Region's Castle Myth: The Serpent King and Falkenstein Castle

Falkenstein Castle, situated in the Selke Valley of the Harz Mountains, is drawing thousands of visitors annually with a revived local legend. The tale of the Serpent King, a mythical forest spirit said to have resided in a cave at the foot of the castle, forms a core part of its attraction.

According to the story, the Serpent King lived peacefully in the forest until one of the counts of Falkenstein Castle attempted to steal his valuable crown. The enraged Serpent King then dispatched an army of snakes to conquer the castle, leading to the disappearance of the counts and a dark period for the fortress. Over time, the last count of Falkenstein is said to have appeased the Serpent King and made the castle habitable again.

Joachim Schymalla, the museum director at the castle, uses the legend to enliven the historical context. While direct proof of the Serpent King's existence is absent, Schymalla posits, "Why shouldn't he have been here?" The castle, located in a historically significant region, attracts numerous visitors each year interested in its past and the folklore surrounding it.

Today, Falkenstein Castle stands as a popular tourist site, frequently hosting medieval festivals and offering visitors tours of its restored noble chambers. The legend of the Serpent King continues to be told, reminding visitors of the region's rich folklore and mystique.
