HD Hyundai Samho to Supply Four Port Cranes to Port of Tacoma
HD Hyundai Samho, a shipbuilding subsidiary of HD Hyundai, has secured a contract to deliver four port cranes to Washington United Terminals at the Port of Tacoma. The deal supports the modernization of U.S. port infrastructure.
South Korean shipbuilding firm HD Hyundai Samho has finalized a contract to supply four large port cranes to Washington United Terminals (WUT) at the Port of Tacoma, Washington. The agreement, announced on July 25, is part of WUT's terminal modernization project aimed at enhancing cargo handling capacity and accommodating larger container vessels.
The project involves replacing two aging quay cranes at the terminal with new units and adding two new yard cranes. WUT, a U.S. subsidiary of South Korea's largest shipping company HMM, currently operates eight cranes at the Port of Tacoma. HD Hyundai Samho previously supplied WUT with four cranes in 1999.
HD Hyundai Samho stated the order reflects its design and manufacturing expertise and its understanding of U.S. port operations. The company has supplied a total of twenty port cranes to U.S. ports since 1985. The turnkey contract includes the design, manufacturing, transportation, installation, and commissioning of the cranes, with deliveries scheduled by 2028.
The deal is part of the broader Korea-U.S. shipbuilding cooperation initiative, known as the MASGA project. This contract is expected to strengthen HD Hyundai Samho's position in the U.S. market, aligning with growing emphasis on port supply chain resilience and security.
