Head of Trump Administration's AI Safety Agency Resigns After Three Months

Chris Fall, the director of the Trump administration's Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), has resigned from his role. His departure was confirmed on Monday, only three months after he was selected to lead the organization.

CAISI, which operates under the U.S. Department of Commerce, aims to help the government facilitate "testing and collaborative research" around commercial artificial intelligence systems. According to a spokesperson for the Commerce Department, Arvind Raman, director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will serve as acting director of CAISI and continue to oversee the agency.

No reason was given for Fall's resignation. His exit adds to growing uncertainty surrounding who serves as the administration's point person for AI policy and research. Former White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks stepped down from his role in March and has yet to be replaced.

The resignation comes at a sensitive time, as Chinese open-source models gain traction in the U.S., competing with major proprietary models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Chinese startup Moonshot AI recently unveiled its new Kimi K3 model, which it claims narrows the gap with leading U.S. offerings and surpasses even the most capable systems from OpenAI and Anthropic on certain benchmarks.

The administration has taken a more hands-on approach to AI regulation since the president signed an executive order in June. The order asks AI developers to voluntarily provide models to the government for assessment before full release.
