A collaborative study by researchers from Krems University Hospital and Johns Hopkins University has identified a significant factor influencing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the inner ear: patient head position. The findings were published in the European Journal of Radiology.

The research demonstrates that subtle variations in the head's tilt angle can introduce artifacts, termed "flow voids," caused by the movement of fluid within the inner ear under the magnetic field. These artifacts, the study cautions, can easily be misinterpreted as signs of disease, potentially leading to diagnostic errors.

Radiologists can use these findings to optimize MRI examination protocols for the inner ear. By understanding how head positioning affects imaging, medical professionals can improve the accuracy and reliability of diagnoses related to inner ear conditions.
