Health Canada approves Probuphine implant for opioid dependence

Knight Therapeutics has received regulatory clearance from Health Canada for Probuphine, a subdermal buprenorphine implant designed for long-term opioid dependence treatment.

3 November 2026

Health Canada has approved the use of Probuphine, a subdermal buprenorphine implant, for the treatment of opioid dependence. The therapy is indicated for patients who are already clinically stabilized on low-dose sublingual buprenorphine and are concurrently receiving psychosocial support.

The implant utilizes a drug-delivery system that releases buprenorphine continuously over a six-month period following a single in-office procedure. Four small implants are placed under the skin of the inner upper arm, designed to remove the need for daily medication intake. This product was developed using Titan Pharmaceuticals’ ProNeura technology.

Knight Therapeutics secured the exclusive Canadian distribution rights for the drug from Braeburn in 2016. CEO Jonathan Ross Goodman stated that the company is currently coordinating with stakeholders to integrate the treatment into the Canadian medical landscape.
