Heide City Must Save Due to Million-Euro Deficit

The city of Heide in Schleswig-Holstein is implementing significant cost-saving measures to tackle a multi-million euro budget deficit. The city council approved a package of austerity measures on Wednesday evening, which includes raising parking fees and fees for sports hall usage. Reductions will also be made in street lighting and plantings.

Planned construction projects, such as the roof for the central bus station (ZOB) at Heide's train station, have been put on hold. According to the city, these actions will save over 1.5 million euros, which is the minimum amount required by the regional supervisory authority for budget approval in 2025. However, the underlying deficit of 13.5 million euros remains substantial.

Projections from the city indicate a worsening financial situation in the coming years. By 2027, additional deficits totaling approximately 40 million euros are expected. A major contributing factor is the new construction of the Heide Ost school center, which will burden the city's budget by 100 million euros.

The austerity measures are expected to impact city services and infrastructure development. City officials emphasize the necessity of adapting to the challenging financial climate while ensuring essential services and meeting regulatory requirements.
