Heidelberg Materials Ready-Mix Drivers Strike Over Unfair Labor Practices

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania โ€“ February 27, 2024 โ€“ Ready-mix concrete drivers represented by Teamsters Local 249 at Heidelberg Materials' Pittsburgh plant have initiated a strike, citing the company's alleged refusal to bargain in good faith. The labor action involves a unit of 11 drivers.

Teamsters Local 249, which has represented members at the company for over three decades, announced the strike after two contract proposals were rejected by the drivers. The union claims the company has failed to offer a fair contract addressing key issues including first-year pay, healthcare benefits, and pension contributions. Drivers have also reported facing retaliation for resisting the company's concessionary demands.

"These drivers are responsible for all of Heidelberg's ready-mix operations in Allegheny County, yet the company has shown them nothing but disrespect during negotiations," said Kevin Schmitt, President of Local 249. "Heidelberg Teamsters will not rest until the company returns with a contract that reflects the value our members bring to work every single day."

The drivers' concerns also extend to proposed changes in work rules, which they argue would favor corporate policies over established union practices. Specific points of contention include weaker seniority provisions, reduced protections against disciplinary actions, and less union input regarding the use of in-cab cameras monitoring drivers.

This strike highlights ongoing labor relations challenges within the construction materials sector, where negotiations over wages, benefits, and working conditions are critical for operational stability and employee satisfaction.
