HelloCollege released an analysis on July 16, 2026, of application data from nearly 500 students in the Class of 2026. The findings suggest that the number of applications submitted tended to rise as students targeted more selective institutions.
The data revealed that students applying to one to three colleges had an average admission rate of 44% for the most selective school on their list. In contrast, students applying to 16 or more colleges had an average admission rate of only 7% for their most selective choice.
This pattern indicates that students aiming for highly competitive schools often broaden their application lists to manage admission risks. Kevin Krebs, founder of HelloCollege, stated that there is no universal "magic number" for applications, and a balanced strategy is more critical.
