Hepatitis D Remains Overlooked Threat for Hepatitis B Patients

The 2026 World Hepatitis Day campaign, observed on Monday, highlights the necessity of reducing obstacles to hepatitis diagnosis, treatment, and overall care access. Estimates from health organizations indicate that Hepatitis D substantially worsens disease progression, increasing the risk of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Treatment challenges are frequently linked to insufficient awareness and limited therapeutic options compared to Hepatitis B. Consequently, the campaign advocates for enhanced screening protocols for at-risk populations and broader access to treatment to alleviate the global disease burden.
Advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of HDV are crucial for improving patient outcomes and decreasing the incidence of severe liver diseases. The objective is to ensure all Hepatitis B patients receive necessary monitoring and care for Hepatitis D as well.
