Hero MotoCorp to Launch First Electric Motorcycles Next Year
Indian automotive giant Hero MotoCorp has announced plans to unveil its first all-electric motorcycles next year. This move expands the company's electric vehicle (EV) offerings into a new segment.
Indian motorcycle manufacturer Hero MotoCorp is set to introduce its first fully electric motorcycles next year. This expansion will occur alongside its existing electric scooter brand, VIDA, marking the company's entry into the e-motorcycle market.
The company plans to launch two new models within the next year. One model, internally codenamed Project Ubex, is designed for urban mobility, offering performance and acceleration on an electric platform while remaining practical for city environments. The second model, codenamed VXZ, is targeted towards adventure riding and has been developed in collaboration with US-based Zero Motorcycles.
Hero MotoCorp CEO Harshavardhan Chitale stated that the new models will be available well ahead of the Delhi government's proposed ban on internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheeler sales in the capital, effective April 2028. The company is developing new platforms that leverage learnings from its electric scooter development but with technology tailored to meet the performance, rideability, and range expectations of motorcycle consumers.
The market share for electric motorcycles within the overall electric two-wheeler segment in India remains small, currently dominated by e-scooters. However, new players like Ultraviolette, Oben Electric, and Matter Motor have been emerging. Hero MotoCorp's entry could intensify competition and attract riders from the traditional ICE motorcycle ecosystem. Registrations for electric two-wheelers in India have seen significant growth, and the overall Indian EV market is projected for substantial expansion by 2030.
