Svenska Aerogel has outlined the significance of the Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) for coatings manufacturers, especially concerning cool roof applications.
SRI quantifies a material's ability to reflect solar radiation and emit heat. Measured on a scale from 0 to 100, a higher SRI value indicates a surface will remain cooler under direct sunlight. This property is crucial for limiting heat absorption.
Coatings with high SRI values contribute to energy efficiency by reducing the amount of heat transferred into buildings. This lowers the demand for air conditioning, leading to decreased energy consumption, reduced costs, and a smaller carbon footprint.
The company highlights the performance of its material, Quartzene, in cool roof paints. An evaluation by RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) on a paint formulation containing Quartzene yielded an SRI of 123, demonstrating its effectiveness in rejecting solar energy.
