HigherVisibility Analyzes Google's AI Content Guideline Update

Digital marketing agency HigherVisibility has published an analysis of Google's updated guidelines for AI-generated content. The revision expands the requirement for manual fact-checking to include metadata elements.

2 October 2026

Memphis, TN โ€“ Digital marketing agency HigherVisibility has released a line-by-line analysis of Google's October 1, 2026, revision to its official guidance on AI-generated content, the first change to the document in a year.

The analysis finds that the most consequential edit, which has received less public focus, is the expansion of the manual fact-checking requirement. Google now explicitly states that manual review applies to title elements, meta descriptions, structured data, and image alt text โ€“ metadata surfaces commonly generated automatically in e-commerce and programmatic SEO efforts without human oversight.

This update arrives amid Google's September 2026 spam update, which the company estimates could last up to two weeks, a significantly longer duration than previous updates. Concurrently, Google Research published a paper on its SAFE system for identifying coordinated synthetic content at scale.

"Google just wrote down the standard it will point to when something goes wrong," said Adam Heitzman, managing partner at HigherVisibility. "If a plugin or template writes your titles, descriptions, schema, or alt text and nobody reads the output, the guidance now names that exact workflow. The fix is not complicated, but it has to happen before publishing, not after."

The analysis also clarifies that the Merchant Center requirement to label AI-generated product images with IPTC metadata was not part of this update, having been live since at least May 2025. HigherVisibility's published piece includes a direct comparison of the before-and-after text and a five-step audit for the affected metadata surfaces.
