Highstar Unveils Complete Battery Cell Portfolio for AI Data Centers

Highstar unveiled its complete battery cell solution for Artificial Intelligence Data Centers (AIDC) in Nantong, China, on July 27, 2026. The announcement was made at the GGII 2026 Energy Storage Industry Summit. The portfolio addresses three critical power layers: UPS and high-voltage DC (HVDC) systems for the "gray space," battery backup units (BBUs) for the "white space," and grid energy storage.

As AI workloads increase rack density and load volatility, data centers require faster response times, reliable backup, controlled temperature rise, and robust lifecycle performance. Highstar's solution focuses on two products targeted at the layers closest to the compute loads.

For the gray space, an 85 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) high-rate cell is designed for UPS and HVDC systems needing to deliver high power rapidly and maintain reliable backup under frequent pulse conditions. Additionally, 50 Ah sodium-ion cells are offered for broader temperature tolerance, operating from -40°C to 80°C.

For white space BBUs, Highstar provides cylindrical cells in 18,650 and 21,700 formats, utilizing LFP and high-nickel NMC chemistries. These cells are engineered for high instantaneous power, low internal resistance, and enhanced safety to accommodate varying rack space, power, and cost requirements.

The grid energy storage system utilizes 314 Ah lithium-ion and 160 Ah sodium-ion cells, balancing long-duration energy storage, lifespan, and rapid power support. Collectively, these three layers form a coordinated offering from rack-level protection and system-level backup to grid-scale energy storage. Highstar was also recognized as an "Industry Reference in AIDC Energy Storage" at the summit.
