IT Home reported on July 17th that Hisilicon Technology has announced that shipment volumes for televisions utilizing its GPMI (General Multimedia Interface) chip have neared one million units. The company stated that nearly all major domestic TV brands have implemented GPMI terminals in mass production and commercial applications.

The GPMI standard, which saw its final specifications approved in mid-2026, aims to simplify connectivity for the AI era. It consolidates audio/video signals, data, and power delivery into a single cable, addressing the complexity of multiple connections in modern home entertainment systems. The standard boasts high bandwidth capabilities of up to 144 Gbps and supports power delivery up to 480W.

Hisilicon has introduced three GPMI conversion chips under its Hi3161 series, designed to cover consumer electronics, commercial displays, and PC/mobile ecosystems. The technology enables modular TV designs where the display and processing unit can be separated, allowing users to customize or upgrade components with a single GPMI cable connection. It also supports bidirectional control signals, facilitating communication between devices like set-top boxes and TVs.

Major Chinese telecommunication operators, including China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and Hunan Network, have joined the GPMI ecosystem. Hunan Cable has deployed the first commercial GPMI insertion-type micro set-top box, reportedly reducing cabling costs by 40% compared to previous solutions. Jiangsu Cable is also piloting the technology.
