Historic Black House Speakers to Gather in Chicago for "Beyond the Gavel" Brunch

Illinois House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch will host a gathering in Chicago on July 27, bringing together four other prominent Black legislative leaders from across the United States. The event, titled "Beyond the Gavel," will celebrate leadership in public service and its lasting impact.

This unique brunch is scheduled to coincide with the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL). Held along the Chicago River, the event will feature five historic House Speakers who have broken ground in their respective states: Welch from Illinois, Carl Heastie from New York, Don Scott from Virginia, Joanna E. McClinton from Pennsylvania, and Melissa Minor-Brown from Delaware.

According to Welch, the gathering aims to honor leaders who have opened doors for others and strengthened democracy. "Together, we represent the progress that's possible when opportunity meets determination," Welch stated in a press release. Elected officials, community leaders, and supporters from across the country are expected to attend.

The event is scheduled to take place at NAIA, located at 300 N. La Salle Drive in Chicago. Tickets are priced at $300, with limited availability. Advance RSVP is required.
