Hitachi develops thin inverter technology for EVs

Hitachi and its subsidiary Hitachi Astemo have developed basic technology for a thin-type inverter for electric vehicles (EVs), aiming to improve energy efficiency and reduce size. The technology integrates power semiconductors, which control power supply, with printed circuit boards, simplifying power wiring.

This integration reduces energy loss during power semiconductor switching by 30% and shrinks the inverter's size by approximately 50% compared to conventional products. The manufacturing process is also streamlined, requiring less welding and fewer components, contributing to reduced CO2 emissions throughout the product lifecycle.

The development is seen as a significant step towards a carbon-neutral society, with potential applications beyond EVs. The technology can be applied to EV fast-charging systems and power transmission systems for renewable energy.
