Hitachi Industrial Products to Launch High-Capacity Multi-Port EV Charger

Hitachi Industrial Products announced it will launch a high-capacity multi-port electric vehicle (EV) charger in October 2023. The new charger aims to reduce charging times and eliminate congestion by allowing multiple vehicles to charge simultaneously.

The charger features bidirectional charge/discharge technology to help manage grid load without requiring reinforcement. Hitachi stated this capability leverages EVs as distributed energy resources, crucial for stabilizing the grid as EV adoption grows.

This launch comes as Japan aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 and mandates all new passenger car sales to be electric by 2035. However, EV adoption has been hindered by insufficient charging infrastructure. Hitachi Industrial Products is also participating in demonstrations of the next-generation CHAdeMO 3.0 (ChaoJi2) charging standard.

The charger will be available in 250 kW and 500 kW models, offering flexible port configurations for simultaneous charging. Hitachi plans to showcase the product at the Hitachi Social Innovation Forum 2023 later this month.
