HMS Networks Advises on Industrial Cyber Defense Strategies

Cybersecurity is a growing concern in industrial automation, with the manufacturing sector being the most targeted, according to the World Economic Forum's 2023 report. Attacks on Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are increasing, and Gartner predicts that cyberattacks could endanger human lives by 2025.

HMS Networks emphasizes the critical distinction between Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT). Unlike IT, OT cannot tolerate compromised quality or increased latency, as even minor disruptions can lead to catastrophic consequences such as production downtime, material waste, and financial losses. OT demands deterministic data and uptime assurance.

A common conflict arises between Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), who prioritize Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA), and operations managers focused on Safety, Availability, Integrity, and Confidentiality (SAIC). Despite differing priorities, collaboration is essential for safeguarding business continuity.

Companies are urged to develop comprehensive security plans for OT environments. This includes thorough asset identification and risk assessment, rapid anomaly detection, and robust protective and recovery measures. Relying solely on asset inventory and threat detection is insufficient for securing these critical industrial systems. A proactive, tailored approach is necessary.
