HMS Networks Clarifies Ethernet Auto-Negotiation Function
HMS Networks has released a technical white paper detailing the auto-negotiation feature of Ethernet networking. The document explains how speed, duplex, and connection parameters are managed.

Network device manufacturer HMS Networks has published a technical paper outlining the auto-negotiation protocol for Ethernet, a key component in modern wired network connections.
The auto-negotiation feature, first defined as part of the IEEE 802.3 standard in 1997, is an automatic plug-and-play technology. It enables network devices communicating over a shared wire to mutually agree on transmission speed, duplex mode, and other operational parameters. Operating at the physical (PHY) layer of the OSI model, the protocol ensures that two connected devices establish compatible settings.
According to HMS Networks, the proper functioning of auto-negotiation is critical for network performance. Issues can arise when one device is set to auto-negotiate while the other is configured with a fixed speed and duplex setting. Specifically, if an auto-negotiating device defaults to half-duplex mode because the remote device's duplex setting is indeterminable, and the remote device is in full-duplex, this can lead to significant performance degradation and connection problems.
The white paper details how the protocol negotiates speed (10 Mb/s, 100 Mb/s, and Gigabit Ethernet) and duplex settings. It also covers the Auto-MDIX function for cable termination and flow control. HMS Networks emphasizes that IEEE compliance for Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mb/s) mandates the use of auto-negotiation, meaning 1000 Mb/s is not a valid hard-coded option in compliant devices.
