HMS Networks Enables Communication Between Red Lion Devices Using MQTT

HMS Networks has published a technical note outlining the configuration process for enabling communication between two Red Lion devices using the Generic MQTT protocol and the Mosquitto MQTT broker. This method is presented as one of four communication options for Red Lion devices, alongside Modbus TCP/IP, OPC Proxy TCP/IP Master, and OPC UA.

The guide specifically details a setup involving a CR3000 HMI device running Crimson 3.1 software and a DA50A FlexEdge device running Crimson 3.2 software. It provides step-by-step instructions for configuring network interfaces, setting up the Generic MQTT connectors, and defining internal tags and tag sets on both devices.

Data transfer is achieved by configuring one device to publish data to a specific MQTT topic (e.g., "dev1") and the other device to subscribe to that topic. For instance, a value from Tag 2 on the DA50A can be published and received by the CR3000's Tag 2. Conversely, data entered manually on the CR3000's Tag 1 can be published and received by the DA50A's Tag 1 via a separate topic (e.g., "dev2").

The documentation also includes instructions for installing and running the Mosquitto broker on a Windows system. This technical note provides a practical method for industrial automation users to integrate devices and facilitate data exchange through a standardized messaging protocol.
