Addressing Slow PLC Software Performance During Remote Access

HMS Networks has outlined common causes for performance degradation in PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) software when accessed remotely, particularly through their Talk2M VPN service.

The company notes that sluggishness can stem from multiple points within the connection chain. These factors range from the computer running the PLC software to the internet service provider's bandwidth, the stability of Wi-Fi or cellular connections, and potential network congestion from other devices sharing the Ewon gateway.

Hardware specifications of the machine running the software, or the PLC software itself experiencing typical delays when handling large program uploads, downloads, or extensive live data monitoring, can also contribute. The physical distance to servers and network infrastructure limitations, such as weak cabling or interference, are also considered.

HMS Networks also points to potential issues with specific hardware manufacturers, such as Rockwell Automation devices, which may exhibit significant delays over VPN connections that are not apparent on local networks. The choice of VPN protocol, UDP versus TCP, can also impact performance, with TCP often recommended for program transfers due to its error correction capabilities.
