HMS Networks Publishes Industrial Cellular Connectivity Guide
HMS Networks has released a guide for implementing cellular connectivity in industrial automation. The publication offers best practices for device installation and antenna selection.
HMS Networks, a global expert in communication, monitoring, and control for industrial automation, has published a new guide on leveraging cellular networks for industrial automation applications. The release, titled "Cellular Guide and Best Practices," specifically addresses scenarios where traditional internet or WAN access is unavailable, such as in remote and rugged environments.
The guide focuses on the SN and RAM series of cellular routers from Red Lion Controls, which enable reliable data transmission via cellular networks. Its aim is to assist users in optimizing the use of mobile connections within industrial automation, providing guidelines for equipment installation, antenna selection and placement, and cellular network usage to achieve the best possible signal and data transfer speeds.
The publication highlights that integrating cellular technology into industrial settings is still in its early stages but offers significant benefits, including wireless transmission of Modbus data to remote SCADA systems, good data transfer speeds using LTE and 3G technologies, and enhanced data security.
Particular attention in the guide is given to antennas and signal quality. The correct selection and placement of an antenna are critical for data transfer performance. The guide also offers advice on the impact of environmental factors such as water, glass, metal, and structures on the signal, as well as how to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) to ensure an optimal connection.
