HNTB Selected by Amtrak for Northeast Corridor Bridge Design
Amtrak has selected HNTB to advance the design for replacing the Bush River and Gunpowder River bridges in Maryland, aiming to improve rail reliability and capacity on the Northeast Corridor.

HNTB has been selected by Amtrak to provide architectural and engineering services for the replacement of the Bush River Bridge and the Gunpowder River Bridge in Maryland. These projects are part of an effort to enhance the reliability, capacity, and long-term performance of the Northeast Corridor, a vital passenger rail line.
The bridge replacements are intended to support higher-speed rail service while maintaining and improving operations for intercity, commuter, and freight trains. The new structures are expected to improve system resiliency and reduce long-term maintenance needs.
"These projects represent an important opportunity to continue our longstanding partnership with Amtrak on infrastructure that is essential to the Northeast Corridor," said Christian Brown, HNTB project manager. "Our team looks forward to developing solutions that align with Amtrak's operational goals while supporting reliable service."
The Bush River and Gunpowder River bridges are critical components of Amtrak's broader initiative to modernize aging infrastructure across the NEC. Both bridges handle significant daily rail traffic, making their replacement essential for maintaining reliable operations. HNTB has a history of supporting Amtrak on major bridge projects in the corridor for over 30 years.
