Hokkien concert revives thousand-year-old tradition

The Hokkien Music & Culture Global Tour premiered on August 21 in Huizhou, China. This marked the first Hokkien-language original song concert staged in mainland China outside the language's traditional origin. The Huizhou premiere sold out.

The event, organized by YUELAIMEI, aims to give a new voice to a thousand-year-old tradition. The concert featured a selection of original Hokkien-language songs, composed and written in the dialect.

China's Ministry of Culture has supported similar initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting regional languages and cultural heritage. The Hokkien language, primarily spoken in Fujian Province and parts of Taiwan, is one of China's significant dialects.

This concert series is part of a broader effort to bring local traditions to the global stage and ensure their continuity for future generations.
