Swedish forest industry group Holmen has decided to invest SEK 1.1 billion in a biofuel boiler for its paperboard mill in Workington, UK. The project is expected to be commissioned in April 2013.

The new facility will cover the mill's entire energy requirements for electricity and steam, switching from fossil natural gas to biofuels. This transition is projected to largely eliminate the mill's fossil carbon dioxide emissions. The boiler is designed for a total output of 150 MW, producing an estimated 325 GWh of electricity and 420 GWh of thermal energy annually.

"The biofuel boiler will substantially reduce energy costs, boosting the mill's competitiveness," stated Magnus Hall, President and CEO of Holmen. He added that the investment reflects the company's commitment to further developing paperboard production at the Workington site.

Workington Mill employs just over 400 people and is part of the Iggesund Paperboard business area. The mill produces approximately 200,000 tonnes of folding boxboard annually under the Incada brand.
