Home Assistant Renames Cloud Service, Cites Big Tech's Cloud Impact

The open-source smart home platform Home Assistant is removing "cloud" from its service name. The service will now be known as Home Assistant Link, and its logo will be updated to reflect this change.

Founder Paulus Schoutsen stated that the move is a reaction to the perceived negative impact of large technology companies on cloud services. "Big tech ruined the cloud, so we're out," Schoutsen told The Verge. He believes that major tech firms have complicated and made cloud platforms less user-friendly.

This renaming is part of a broader, long-term strategy to establish Home Assistant as a mainstream smart home platform. Schoutsen indicated that many users discover Home Assistant after encountering limitations with more common options like Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Apple Home.

While Home Assistant offers powerful and open features, it is known for having a steep learning curve. The rebranding aims to simplify the user perception of the service and distance it from the connotations associated with corporate-controlled cloud infrastructure.

Home Assistant Link intends to provide a robust and user-centric smart home management solution, diverging from the landscape dominated by large technology corporations.
