Honda Outsourcing Core Platform Development to India's Tata Technologies
Honda has outsourced the development of its new vehicle platform to India-based Tata Technologies. This marks the first time Honda has handed over the development of a core vehicle component to an Indian firm, aiming to reduce R&D costs.
Tokyo – Honda is shifting away from its traditional in-house development model by outsourcing the creation of its new vehicle platform to India's Tata Technologies. According to sources cited by Bloomberg, this agreement represents Honda's first instance of engaging an Indian company for the development of a core vehicle component, with the primary goal of significantly reducing research and development expenditures.
This strategic move signifies a substantial departure from Honda's historical approach, where core technologies were primarily developed internally or through established supplier networks. The decision to outsource platform development comes amid Honda's strategic reassessment of its electrification efforts and in the face of considerable losses in its electric vehicle business, while hybrid models remain a key revenue stream.
The platform is expected to support multiple vehicle models and be compatible with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, as well as hybrid and fully electric variants. Tata Technologies, part of India's Tata Group, provides automotive engineering, development, and digital services. This collaboration will encompass the foundational architecture for future Honda models.
A Honda spokesperson stated that the company is continually exploring various collaborative possibilities with external partners to enhance future competitiveness. However, the company declined to comment on specific details regarding market speculation or partner relationships.
