Honda Motor Co., Ltd. held a press briefing on December 18, 2024, to outline its hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) business strategy and unveil advancements to its e:HEV hybrid system.
The automaker aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 and plans for battery-electric and fuel cell vehicles to represent 100% of its global new vehicle sales by 2040. During the transition period before widespread EV adoption in the late 2020s, Honda anticipates continued strong demand for hybrid vehicles.
The upcoming e:HEV system is designed to enhance both fuel efficiency and driving performance. New 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engines, coupled with updated drive units and cooling systems on a new platform, aim for over a 10% improvement in fuel economy compared to current models. These engines are engineered to meet future environmental regulations while providing robust performance across various driving conditions.
Honda targets selling 1.3 million hybrid vehicles annually worldwide by 2030. The company intends to increase the profitability and growth of its hybrid business, which it sees as crucial for supporting its future electric vehicle initiatives.
