Hong Kong seeks up to $2.5 billion in digital green bonds

Hong Kong is looking to raise between HK$15 billion and HK$20 billion (approximately US$1.9 billion to US$2.5 billion) in a multi-currency digital green bond sale. The issuance, which could be priced as early as September 28, is expected to include US dollars, Hong Kong dollars, euros, and offshore yuan.

Banks involved in arranging the offering have begun reaching out to investors for meetings. A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), the city's de facto central bank and representative for the government in this potential offering, declined to comment.

This planned issuance is set to further expand Hong Kong's market for tokenized bonds. The government previously sold approximately HK$10 billion (about US$1.27 billion) worth of similar bonds last year.

The HKMA has established a Tokenized Bond Expert Group and maintains a digital bond repository. In a 2023 research memo, the authority assessed the benefits of bond tokenization, signaling its ongoing interest in digitalizing financial instruments.
