Austin, Minnesota – Food giant Hormel Foods has agreed to purchase Brakebush Brothers, a family-owned producer of value-added chicken products, for approximately $1.06 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of Hormel’s fiscal year 2027, pending regulatory approval.
The acquisition is part of Hormel's broader strategy to invest in fast-growing protein categories. Brakebush Brothers, founded in 1925, generated approximately $1.2 billion in net sales over the past 12 months. The company operates five production facilities and two research and development labs, focusing on foodservice customers.
Hormel states that the acquisition of Brakebush will bolster its Foodservice business. The deal is expected to bring stronger operator relationships, additional category expertise, and a larger direct sales team. The company believes Brakebush will enhance its capabilities, providing more scale, expertise, and customer reach to support its long-term growth strategy.
Hormel Foods, founded in 1891, is known for brands like SPAM, Skippy, and Jennie-O. The company aims to significantly expand its chicken offerings through this acquisition, targeting a growing segment of the protein market.
