House Judiciary Committee Passes Bill to Prevent Future Immigration Crises

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, passed an updated version of H.R. 2, a bill intended to strengthen border security and prevent future immigration crises. The legislation, titled the 'Secure Border Act,' now moves to the full House of Representatives for consideration.

The bill aims to systematically close loopholes that critics argue have allowed for the current level of illegal immigration. According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the legislation would prevent future administrations from shirking their border security responsibilities and allowing inadmissible aliens into the country without proper detention or return.

"We congratulate the Judiciary Committee for its swift action on this critical legislation," said Dale Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of FAIR. Wilcox emphasized that ending border chaos and rampant illegal immigration was a key reason for the Republican party's electoral gains. He urged the Republican leadership in Congress to deliver on promises made to voters in 2024 before the upcoming midterm elections.

FAIR asserts that U.S. immigration laws are not currently being enforced in the public's interest, and that enforcement is not guaranteed without congressional action. The organization is calling for the House to pass the bill with a simple majority, creating an opportunity for the Senate to take a stance before the fall elections.
