The German bird conservation association LBV has officially designated the common house martin (Delichon urbicum) as its bird of the year for 2027. The selection was the result of a national public vote, with the house martin securing 45,2 percent of the 148,000 votes cast. The species outperformed four other candidates, including the common crane and the pied flycatcher.

House martins are known for building nests on the exterior of residential buildings, often living in close proximity to human settlements. However, the species is currently classified as threatened on Germany's red list. LBV officials noted that population declines are largely driven by the loss of suitable nesting sites during building renovations and a significant reduction in the availability of flying insects, which serve as their primary food source.

"The house martin has lived alongside humans for centuries, but nesting is becoming increasingly difficult due to modern architecture and the lack of suitable building materials," said LBV spokesperson Franziska Back. The organization plans to use the title to promote conservation practices, such as encouraging property owners to tolerate nests and providing muddy areas to assist birds in construction.

Launched in 1971, the bird of the year program has transitioned to an open election format since 2021. This move is intended to raise public awareness of species that rely on human-dominated landscapes for survival.
