How PhonePe Generates Revenue: Monetization Strategies for a Super App

PhonePe, primarily known in India as a free UPI app, is continuously evolving its business model as it aims for profitability before a potential initial public offering (IPO). While services like bill payments and money transfers are free for individual users, the company generates revenue from several other avenues, including merchant services, lending, insurance, and advertising.

The company has secured significant capital to scale its operations and expand its user base. A substantial portion of PhonePe's revenue, reportedly 86% in FY25, comes from payment processing. This includes commissions from partners like telecom and electricity providers whose services are facilitated through the app.

Merchant services represent PhonePe's fastest-growing business segment. The company charges fees to merchants who utilize PhonePe's QR codes, soundboxes, and point-of-sale devices for accepting payments. These services provide a consistent, subscription-based revenue stream, facing intense competition from other fintech players like Paytm, Google Pay, and BharatPe.

Leveraging its vast distribution network of over 700 million consumers, PhonePe is expanding into lending and insurance. The strategy aims to convert user trust and data into valuable revenue on these new fronts, pursuing profitability and preparing for future growth funding.
