How to Make Google Maps and Apple Maps Show the Fastest Route

Google Maps and Apple Maps, two of the world's most popular mapping applications, do not always present users with the fastest route by default. Google Maps prioritizes fuel efficiency, while Apple Maps might suggest previously used routes that are not necessarily the quickest.

In Google Maps, users can override the default behavior and opt for the fastest route by navigating to Settings > Route options and toggling off "Prefer fuel-efficient routes." The app defaults to the most fuel-efficient path, which can add one to five minutes to travel time, especially in traffic.

For Apple Maps, ensuring the fastest route involves disabling the "Preferred Routes & Predict Destinations" feature. The application uses on-device processing to learn a user's typical driving routes. If speed is a priority, adjusting these settings is recommended.

Both applications can also be configured to avoid tolls and highways, which may extend travel times. Users should check the settings within Google Maps and Apple Maps to ensure "Avoid tolls" and "Avoid highways" are switched off to guarantee they are offered the fastest possible routes.
