HPQ Silicium details path to solar-grade silicon metal production

Quebec-based HPQ Silicium Inc. is focusing on the development of a production process for solar-grade silicon metal. CEO Bernard Tourillon detailed the company's strategy and technological advancements in an interview with pvbuzz.com, a Canadian solar energy news outlet.

The company is advancing its proprietary PUREVAPTM Quartz Reduction Reactors (QRR) technology, a carbothermic process designed to transform quartz into high-purity silicon metal in a single step. HPQ Silicium claims this method could potentially reduce production costs by as much as two-thirds compared to existing methods.

HPQ Silicium is collaborating with industry experts, including PyroGenesis Canada Inc. and Apollon Solar, to further develop the technology. The company's objective is to establish a vertically integrated production chain, encompassing the manufacturing of solar-grade silicon metal and photovoltaic solar cells.

A pilot plant to validate the commercial viability of the PUREVAPTM process is on schedule to commence operations in mid-2019. Successful validation is a key step towards the company's commercialization plans for its silicon production technology.

The company highlights its commitment to developing greener manufacturing processes for critical materials, supporting the broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions. HPQ Silicium aims to become a key player in the advanced materials sector through its clean production initiatives.
