HR Expert: Stop Asking Candidates About Resume Gaps

HR expert Suzanne Lucas states that the common interview question, "Can you explain the gap in your resume?" should be retired. Lucas argues the question is not only outdated but also detrimental to the hiring process.

Lucas emphasizes that candidates should be treated equally regardless of their employment status. Instead of inquiring about gaps, interviewers should focus on standard questions like "Tell me about a time when..." or "How would you approach this problem?". If a company is concerned about a candidate's proficiency in a specific skill or software, a direct approach, such as "Tell me about your experience with X," is more effective than asking what they have been doing during a particular period.

Questions about resume gaps force job seekers to either disclose sensitive personal information, such as health issues or family responsibilities, or to lie about their job search. Both outcomes are problematic. Sharing personal details can lead to discriminatory decision-making, while dishonesty undermines a candidate's credibility.

Lucas notes that unemployment is typically due to external factors like layoffs, rather than an unwillingness to work. She urges recruiters to concentrate on a candidate's skills and suitability for the role rather than spending time on irrelevant inquiries about resume gaps.
