HR Platform HiBob Proposes Career Path Redesign for AI Era

HR platform HiBob has introduced a new approach to career development, termed 'wildflowering'. The model suggests that instead of traditional career ladders, employees should be encouraged to grow organically around their individual strengths to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape of AI.

Macaire Montini, VP of People and Culture at HiBob, argues that artificial intelligence is reshaping jobs at a pace that outstrips organizational capacity to redesign career paths. She believes that rigid, hierarchical career ladders are becoming obsolete. Montini proposes a model of growing 'career mushrooms,' where individuals expand their skills across various projects and roles before potentially moving upwards. This approach aims to ensure that the right people, utilizing uniquely human skills, are placed in the most suitable positions in the AI era.

The traditional career trajectory is facing challenges. Some industries are seeing fewer entry-level positions as AI automates routine tasks, leading to concerns about future management pipelines. Additionally, flatter organizational structures are increasing the span of control for middle managers, potentially limiting promotion opportunities and increasing job-related stress. Montini advocates for career paths that broaden before they ascend.

Montini highlights the need for companies to invest in training employees on how to effectively use AI tools and to grant them permission to experiment. Simply providing AI tools without adequate instruction, she posits, will not yield the expected creative output. She likens it to giving people musical instruments and expecting a symphony without proper training.

Moving away from outdated career models, 'wildflowering' focuses on identifying and nurturing an employee's natural talents. Montini describes the company's shared knowledge base as the 'soil' in which an employee's potential is planted. By providing the necessary skills, individuals are then empowered to grow and develop uniquely.
