HR Software Firm HireRoad Accelerates Product Development With AI

HR software company HireRoad has significantly accelerated the development of one of its legacy products, reducing the projected timeline from 18 months to just 16 weeks by fundamentally restructuring its engineering approach around artificial intelligence.

The company, owned by investment firm Strattam Capital, faced the challenge of modernizing an aging software product. Initially, a complete rewrite was planned, requiring an 18-month timeline and a 30% increase in engineering staff. However, new CEO Jeff Fernandez and his CTO proposed a radical alternative: redesigning the engineering team's organization and job roles to leverage off-the-shelf AI tooling.

This "AI-native" strategy, as described by Strattam, aimed to complete the development within 16 weeks. The rebuild was finished a week ahead of schedule, and the first 34 customers have successfully migrated to the new platform with positive feedback. The project was completed with fewer resources than the original plan, freeing up the planned headcount increase for other developments.

Strattam differentiates this approach from "AI-sprinkling," where AI tools are added without altering core processes, leading to modest productivity gains. The "AI-native" model, conversely, involves humans orchestrating and communicating with AI as the primary tool, leading to potentially exponential gains. The company believes this represents a business transformation rather than just a technology update.

This strategic shift aligns with historical examples where new technologies, like electricity in manufacturing, only yielded significant productivity increases after the entire operational structure was redesigned. HireRoad's success suggests that embracing AI as a core operational principle, rather than an add-on, is key to unlocking substantial business improvements.
