Huawei and HP Sign Patent Cross-License Agreement
Chinese technology company Huawei and American firm Hewlett Packard (HP) have announced a multi-year global patent cross-license agreement. The deal resolves previous patent disputes between the two companies.
Chinese technology company Huawei and American firm Hewlett Packard (HP) have announced a multi-year global patent cross-license agreement. Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it includes Huawei licensing some of its Wi-Fi patents to HP.
As part of the agreement, HP will pay patent royalties to Huawei. Huawei stated that it has licensed its Wi-Fi technology through patent pools and bilateral agreements across various industries. The company estimates that over 1.6 billion consumer electronic devices, excluding smartphones, will use its technology by the end of 2025.
The agreement also concludes past patent disputes between Huawei and HP. Late last year, HP settled a patent dispute regarding wireless networking by becoming a licensee of Sisvel's Wi-Fi 6 patent pool. This settlement also terminated lawsuits filed by Huawei and Philips against HP.
Steven Geiszler, who represented Huawei in the negotiations, described the latest agreement as including "valuable reciprocal patent rights" from HP. HP estimates that the deal grants access to approximately 2,000 patents that are crucial for the 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 standard.
