Huawei and Shanghai Telecom Deploy Over 3400 5G-A Base Stations

Huawei and Shanghai Telecom have jointly deployed over 3400 5G-Advanced (5G-A) 3CC base stations in Shanghai, the company announced. The new stations reportedly achieve peak upload speeds of 1 Gbps and peak download speeds close to 4 Gbps by utilizing carrier aggregation across multiple frequency bands and advanced transmission technologies.

Key urban areas, including commercial districts and pedestrian streets, now have 20 Mbps continuous upload coverage. VIP users can experience peak download speeds of 3 Gbps and upload speeds of 500 Mbps with enhanced scheduling priority. Shanghai Telecom expects full coverage of Shanghai's central urban areas by the end of 2026.

Commercial service packages leveraging the new capabilities have been launched. The collaboration also includes efforts to develop differentiated service guarantees for various applications. By 2026, Shanghai Telecom and Huawei plan to establish a "land, sea, and air" integrated network along the Huangpu River, supporting applications such as AI glasses with multilingual explanations and real-time translation.

Practical demonstrations of the technology are planned across Shanghai. In June 2026, the West Bund Art Museum will feature an immersive exhibition experience using AI glasses. In August 2026, pilot programs for 500 Mbps upload speeds will commence in high-traffic areas like stadiums and historical sites. Shanghai Telecom aims to complete China's first commercial 5G-A and AI-integrated network by March 2026, targeting sectors such as government, tourism, and healthcare.
