Huawei has outlined a classification system for "tough" SUV vehicles, segmenting them into three distinct categories: pure off-road, luxury tough SUV, and urban luxury SUV. Peng Lei, Huawei's product director for intelligent automotive solutions (Ignite series), stated that this categorization is designed to cater to diverse customer needs within the large SUV market.

The top tier is designated for pure off-road vehicles, characterized by strong traversal capabilities but potentially sacrificing some on-road comfort. The second tier, occupied by models like the Luxeed G9, is defined as a luxury tough SUV. These vehicles aim to combine premium interiors and comfort with substantial all-terrain capabilities, including features like differential locks and robust chassis hardware, ensuring performance on paved roads and competency in outdoor scenarios.

The third category consists of urban luxury SUVs, which are closer to mainstream family SUVs. These prioritize luxury and comfort on paved surfaces and typically lack the advanced off-road hardware and differential locks found in the higher tiers.

Additionally, the Luxeed G9 has received approval for L3-level autonomous driving road tests in Beijing. This allows for testing of its 120 km/h highway autonomous driving system under various conditions, including nighttime operation and highway navigation and lane-changing maneuvers.
