Huawei details advancements in XMAGE imaging system

Huawei has detailed the evolution of its XMAGE imaging technology, focusing on enhanced color accuracy across various environments and portrait scenarios.

12 October 2026

Huawei detailed advancements in its XMAGE imaging technology at a recent innovation conference, highlighting improvements in color reproduction for both environmental scenes and human portraits. Li Xiaolong, Huawei Consumer Business Group CTO, explained the progress of the "Red Maple" imaging system across its three generations.

The "Red Maple" system aims to achieve accurate color conversion by capturing spectral "fingerprints" of the environment using multispectral color features. The first generation introduced multispectral cameras to reproduce environmental colors, claiming a 120% increase in color accuracy after five years of development and global research collaboration.

The second generation addressed challenging lighting conditions, such as low light and backlight, improving color reproduction by 96%. It also enhanced color recognition in high dynamic range scenes and improved the resolution of monochromatic scenes.

The third generation of the "Red Maple" system focuses on accurately reproducing skin tones under complex lighting and reducing infrared interference. This iteration reportedly increased skin tone reproduction accuracy by 62%, incorporating chip-level real-time zone calibration technology. Huawei's XMAGE platform covers five key areas: portrait, telephoto, color, video, and intelligent photography.
