Huawei has released a video where Richard Yu, an executive director and chairman of the consumer business group, explains the technology behind the screen of the Pura 90 Max smartphone. The video details how the new coating reduces screen glare and simultaneously improves the screen's scratch resistance.

According to Yu, the anti-reflective property works by controlling light waves, causing the peaks and troughs of reflected light to cancel each other out. This is traditionally achieved through layered materials with varying refractive indexes, creating stepped structures that scatter light and reduce reflections.

The Huawei Pura 90 Max, however, utilizes an innovative optical gradient material for its anti-reflective coating. This structure is described as a "slide" rather than traditional steps, offering a more rigid, integrated design. This enhancement significantly improves the screen's scratch resistance while maintaining its anti-reflective performance.

This advanced coating measures only 2 micrometers in thickness but comprises over 8000 nanoscale layers. Huawei employs a "magnetron sputtering" technique to create these layers within a vacuum environment. The process atomizes the optical gradient material, and a magnetic field guides these particles to deposit evenly onto the screen surface, meticulously building the multi-layered finish. The Huawei Pura 90 series, launched in April, includes the Pura 90, Pro, and Pro Max models. Pricing for the series starts at 4699 yuan in China.
