Huawei launches new Kirin chips with Mate 90 series

Huawei has unveiled its Mate 90 smartphone series, featuring the new Kirin 9030, 9035, and 9050 series chips. The Kirin 9050 Pro is highlighted as the first "logically folded" chip.

Huawei has officially launched its new Mate 90 series of smartphones, powered by its latest Kirin system-on-chips. The standard Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro models are equipped with the Kirin 9030 and Kirin 9035 processors, respectively. Higher-end variants, including the Mate 90 Pro Max and RS models, feature the new Kirin 9050 series chip.

A key announcement is the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which Huawei describes as the first to utilize "logically folded" technology. According to Huawei's Yu Chengdong, this approach aims to optimize data pathways and computation within the chip. Instead of solely relying on traditional performance gains from shrinking transistors, Huawei is focusing on improving efficiency by reducing data travel time and waiting periods.

The "logically folded" technology redesigns the chip's circuitry, stacking components and using high-speed connections to shorten distances and speed up data flow. This is compared to reconfiguring a building with multiple floors and efficient elevators. Huawei stated that it has successfully designed and mass-produced 381 different chips across various sectors.

The introduction of the Mate 90 series and its new Kirin processors signifies Huawei's ongoing commitment to technological advancement in its mobile devices. The launch suggests an effort to reinforce its competitive position in the smartphone market despite previous supply chain challenges.
