Huawei Launches Next-Generation Grid-Forming Energy Storage System

Huawei unveiled its LUTERRA next-generation Smart String Grid-Forming ESS platform at Intersolar Europe in Munich, Germany. Steve Zheng, President of Smart ESS Business at Huawei Digital Power, explained in a press release that the system is engineered for grid-forming applications, offering industry-leading efficiency and ease of installation.

The technology has been successfully deployed in the world's largest 100% renewable microgrid at the Red Sea resort in Saudi Arabia. This project has operated stably for over two years, demonstrating the capability of GFM (Grid-Forming) technology to coordinate large-scale energy resources at the gigawatt-hour level.

LUTERRA incorporates multiple advanced disciplines, including electrochemistry, electrical engineering, and thermodynamics, to achieve industry-leading round-trip efficiency (RTE) and precise state-of-charge (SOC) control. Zheng highlighted that an integrated design, featuring liquid cooling and high-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) architecture, enhances performance and longevity for long-duration energy storage applications (LDES).

Despite its sophisticated technology, the installation and logistics are designed for simplicity. Huawei claims LUTERRA can reduce installation times and Balance of Plant (BOP) costs significantly compared to conventional solutions. The platform offers improved energy efficiency, seamless integration with solar power, and enhanced grid stability.
