Huawei: Network Value Must Be Reshaped for AI Era Growth

During Network X 2026 in Vienna on October 16, 2026, Bob Chen, President of Huawei's Optical Business Product Line, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the need to reshape network value for the era of artificial intelligence (AI). Chen outlined a three-pronged strategy: rebuilding network architecture, rethinking business models, and redefining network management and maintenance.

Chen highlighted that the rapid development of AI, including the growth of large AI models, is fundamentally changing the nature of network connections. He stressed that the industry must reconsider network value creation, shifting focus to AI service demands and data center layouts (AIDC). Concurrently, AI technology should be integrated to enhance network operations and maintenance.

The proposed rebuilding of network architecture involves transitioning from traditional administrative region-centric networks to data center-centric structures. Chen cited Zhongwei, China, as an example where the city has become a major intelligent computing hub due to AI, drastically altering its traffic patterns. For enterprise clients, the suggestion is to move beyond selling bandwidth to offering "bandwidth + latency + reliability" and integrated computing services. For home broadband, the evolution is towards providing smart home experiences rather than just connectivity.

Redefining network management and maintenance entails a shift from semi-automated operations to full lifecycle intelligence. This approach aims to optimize network performance and efficiency in response to AI-driven demands. Chen concluded that these strategic adjustments are crucial for networks to support future growth and innovation in an AI-powered world.
