Chinese technology firm Huawei has secured a patent for a novel wearable device design, announced on September 22. The patent details a wristband whose size can be adjusted via the elastic deformation of a component, diverging from traditional adjustment mechanisms that often consume significant device real estate.
In conventional wristband designs, adjustment structures like buckles or magnetic clasps can occupy a substantial portion of the band's circumference. Huawei's new patent utilizes an elastic element that changes shape as an adjustment mechanism operates. This means the flexible part of the wristband adapts to the wearer's wrist size, rather than relying on a separate, space-consuming adjustment mechanism.
The patent abstract highlights that this approach reduces the proportion of the circumference occupied by the adjustment mechanism, increasing the space available for the elastic component housing functional modules. This could allow for a greater number of features within the wearable device, thereby enhancing its expandability.
While Huawei has previously surveyed consumer interest in screen-less health tracking bands, this patent lays the groundwork for devices that prioritize functionality and compact design.
